VA:Cr2.3.Ka - Create art that represents natural and constructed environments.

Kindergarten students used a range of materials to create these beautiful Winter Scenes.

Students were intrigued to learn that you don't need to paint with just a brush... you can use q-tips too!

We engaged in a mini-lesson about different types of colors, and we made the connection that winter scapes are cold- hence using cold colors!

Students were very proud and excited to have their work displayed in the hallway for everyone to see!

Create

VA:Cr1.1.1.a - Engage collaboratively in exploration and imaginative play with materials.

First grade students watched a video to learn about the artist Jackson Pollock. We engaged in conversation about Pollock's process of "action painting", and then we got to work!

Students worked collaboratively at tables to explore their own version of "action painting".

Students were excited to explore an artistic process rather than trying to reach a specific outcome.

Create

VA:Cr2.2.a - Demonstrate safe procedures for using and cleaning art tools, equipment, and studio spaces.

Second graders learned how to make pinch pots using model magic, markers, and liquid watercolor paint.

We used markers to color the clay before sculpting, and used liquid watercolor after the pinch pots were complete. Students were able to add an extra pop of color and customize their artwork!

After creating, we reviewed clean up procedures, and emphasized the importance of leaving the room as clean as you found it.

Students are eager to be 'helpers' in the classroom, and enjoy the responsibility of having jobs.

Create

VA:Cr2.2.3a - Demonstrate an understanding of the safe and proficient use of materials, tools, and equipment for a variety of artistic processes.

Students listened to the story "Van Gogh and the Sunflowers" by Laurence Anholt, and were shown photos of Van Gogh's artworks.

We discussed his works, and then focused in on his painting "Sunflowers Fourth Version".

Students used colored pencils to draw their flowers in a vase. They were able to choose how they wanted to create their flowers and vase, so that they could integrate their own personal style.

The colored pencils acted as a resist, and the students finished off their paintings with liquid watercolor. Some students used the watercolor only for the background, and in some cases students incorporated it into parts of the vase and flowers as well.

Create

VA:Cr1.1.4a - Brainstorm multiple approaches to a creative art or design problem.

Fourth grade students were introduced to the art of "zentangle", and explored many different types of patterns.

We used the book "The Art of Zentangle: 50 inspiring drawings, designs & ideas for the meditative artist" to practice drawing patterns.

Students followed step-by-step instructions to create intricate patterns, and had to opportunity to create their own patterns as well.

Finally, students drew their name in bubble letters, and created various different sections of zentangle in the background. They used both fine tip and standard Sharpie markers to create their patterns, and colored pencil to make a soft gradient inside their bubble letters.

Create

VA:Cr1.2.5a - Identify and demonstrate diverse methods of artistic investigation to choose an approach for beginning a work of art.

5th grade students learned how to carefully and successfully use carbon paper to start a self portrait. Students had creative freedom to choose what their portrait would look like. This really helped their personalities shine through their work!

After carefully using carbon paper, students traced the image with thin sharpie. The final layer with watercolor really brought these portraits to life. Although they were all given an assignment to create a self portrait, each student's work was unique and intriguing.
