Wednesday, February 16, 2022.... Handmade Zines!

Wednesday February 16 2022 was the 8th graders last day for their handmade zines! They were working hard on their zines for about a week, and their hard work paid off!

In case you are not familiar with zines, they are handmade books that are self published, or published by a small independent publisher. They are non-commercial, and are only printed in limited numbers. This way, the artist can control how they circulate! Zines are a great tool for marginalized voices to be heard- there are no constraints on their work!

In preparation for creating their zines, the eighth graders engaged in a presentation that included a definition of zines, the history of zines, photo examples, and two visual art lessons. These two lessons were typography and covers. Students saw examples of titles, full bleed pages, simple covers, typography, covers that were manipulated, different types of illustrations, digital covers, and more!

Below are some examples from the handmade zine lesson- it was so much fun to go through and document the student work!
